Cutwater Canned Tequila Margarita Review
In this Cutwater Canned Tequila Margarita review, we’ll dive into the world of ready-made margaritas and check out what Cutwater Spirits has to offer. Known for their innovative approach to craft cocktails, Cutwater aims to capture the essence of the classic margarita in a convenient, on-the-go package.
We Tried the Cutwater Lime Margarita
We chose to review the Cutwater Tequila Margarita because they are a prominent name in the canned cocktail world. I’ve seen their products on the shelf for a while and while I prefer to make homemade cocktails, Suzy and I want to explore every margarita that we can.
The can is recognizable and they offer a variety of margarita flavors to appeal to a lot of people. I love that these margaritas come in a can which makes them easy to take anywhere you may want a drink and can’t bring a glass (which is stupid perfect for by the pool or on a boat).
Suzy and I are lovers of margaritas and avid consumers who love to try and share new products. We know that there are tons of store-bought margaritas on the market and not all of them are going to be as tasty as one you could make at home.
We want to help you narrow down the ready-made margaritas so you don’t waste your money. Let us help you find a pre-made margarita that is not only delicious but a decent value.
While we love flavored margaritas, we really like the taste of the original recipe with lime flavor the best. We always compare ready-made margaritas to the classic at-home margarita.

Cutwater Spirits Company Info
Cutwater Spirits has gained a reputation for crafting high-quality spirits. With a background in distilling, winemaking and beer brewing, they have a great understanding of the base spirits that make a cocktail great.
They were at the forefront of the canned cocktail boom and are one of the more popular brands. Based in San Diego, they make a variety of canned cocktails not just margaritas. But we only tried the tequila margaritas for this review.
Cutwater has a tasting room and kitchen in San Diego where you can tour and enjoy food and cocktails. Not only do they offer their canned margaritas, but they also offer other premium cocktails with all of their spirits.
In our reviews, we don’t do a deep dive, especially into the company. We just want to tell you the basics. Read more about the company on their website to learn more.
About Cutwater Lime Margarita
Cost
When it comes to pricing, Cutwater Canned Margaritas offer decent value for the money, with prices ranging from $9.99 to $14.99 for a four-pack which is in line with the cost to make a homemade margarita.
Cutwater Canned Margaritas aim strike a balance between taste, quality, and convenience and I think they do a pretty good job of that.
They are priced competitively and off a ready-made margarita without the hassle of measuring ingredients or mixing.
Ingredients
Cutwater Canned Margaritas are made with natural ingredients, including real tequila and triple sec. It’s hard to actually find their list of ingredients online though and I no longer have the cans at home.
The tequila made by Cutwater appears to be of premium quality (100% blue agave) and additive free so that is a great selling point.
I’ve found mentions of pure-cane sugar and that there were over 300 calories in one can which seems high (a homemade margarita has 168+ calories for a 4-ounce serving). A Cutwater marg is 12 ounces (including 2 shots of tequila) so that makes sense.
Flavors
Cutwater ready-made canned margaritas come in a variety pack of flavors: lime, strawberry, mango, pineapple, spicy pineapple, and peach. We tried only the lime, strawberry and mango.
Alcohol Content
Cutwater Canned Margaritas have an ABV percentage of 12.5% making them less boozy than a typical margarita (around 18-25%) but more boozy than a craft beer (6-10%). This means that you can drink this drink longer and slower which makes it a great day-drinking option.
Packaging and Presentation
These Cutwater Lime Margaritas are sold in recyclable aluminum cans. This helps to minimize its environmental footprint while maintaining product freshness and portability.
I love a canned cocktail. They are easy to drink (you don’t need any extra cups) and pack to take wherever you want without the hassle of protecting the glass. They fit well in a cooler or any cup holder no matter if it’s in a chair or boat or even an inflatable pool floatie.
The design and labeling are clean and modern. It’s easy to tell the flavors apart and it has a nice, classic look that would be great in any cooler.
Serving
You can drink these margaritas straight from the can or serve them over ice in a glass. We tried these out of the can and in a glass and added a quick garnish to show you that these can be used in more classic cocktail settings as well.
These canned margaritas would be great for enjoying on a boat, near a pool or when you’re hosting a Cinco de Mayo party (use these Cinco de Mayo printable decorations!).
Tasting Notes
On the first sip, the lime margarita was not super flavorful. It came off a little watery but I liked that it wasn’t too sweet. Suzy would have liked it a little sweeter, but since I don’t love sweet margaritas or cocktails, I thought it was pretty refreshing. It had a nice amount of acidity with a smooth finish.
While many other reviews say it’s a perfectly balanced margarita, I didn’t get that impression. It’s always going to be hard to mimic the taste of fresh lime juice but that is the bar I measure everything to.
I would serve this Cutwater Lime Tequila Margarita super chilled and not over ice for less chance of dilution. But as with most margaritas, the more you drink the more you like it.
We also tried the Cutwater Strawberry Margarita. It had an artificial strawberry smell. I’m sensitive to sweeteners (or maybe I should say picky) and to me, it tasted like there was an artificial sweetener in it. The tequila came off a little bit bitter in this flavor. I would not buy this flavor again and would say no if I came across it in a cooler.
We also tried the Cutwater Mango Margarita. This one smelled amazing. But the taste was just ok. It would be good with a Tajin rim if served in a glass. I would drink this if it was in a cooler at a party. But I wouldn’t choose it over a homemade margarita or the Cutwater Lime Margarita. Overall, we gave it a rating of 2 out of 5.
Where to Buy
Cutwater Canned Margaritas are widely available at select liquor stores, grocery stores, and online retailers. You can also find them on some restaurant menus. Check out their website for their store locator to find them near you or enjoy the convenience of having these canned margaritas delivered right to your doorstep.
Overall Rating and Conclusion
Our margarita review is on a scale of 1 to 5, we thought Cutwater Canned Tequila Margaritas were a 3. It was just fine. The packaging is convenient, it’s reasonably priced and has an ok, clean flavor without any weird aftertaste.

I like all of them except for the Pineapple margaritas. It tastes like cigarette ashes. Yuk.
