We Tried Hornitos Tequila Plata

Is Hornitos Tequila good?’ Well, ‘good’ isn’t just about taste alone; other factors should also be considered before labeling a tequila ‘good.’ After all, a quality brand is one that we believe should meet all your sipping needs but won’t hurt your budget in the process!

We are also big believers that your personal preferences play a large part in the overall value of a product.

The Hornitos tequila blanco (no contact with wood and unaged tequila) is fairly easy to find in stores. Because of its accessibility, it’s a brand we knew we had to review for you. After all, just because it’s available almost everywhere doesn’t mean we want you to settle for a subpar tequila.

A great tequila can make the classic margarita or any flavored margarita truly unforgettable. But, on the flip side, it should also be entirely sippable on its own. That’s why our answer to the above question is yes, Hornitos Plata is good as long as you mix it in drinks. However, it’s a brand we don’t recommend sipping neat.

OUR QUALIFICATIONS: Sharon has been writing about and creating cocktail recipes for almost 10 years now. Together, Suzy and Sharon have an immense love of tequila and margaritas and have tasted SO many. We aren’t mixologists but feel like we bring the experience of different palates with the common goal of finding delicious products to share with you.

Hornitos Company Info

Hornitos began in the 19th century. Don Cenobio Sauza came up with the bold idea to cook the piñas in little ovens or “hornitos” instead of over open flame to make the tequila taste fresher, brighter, crisp, and overall better.

Don Francisco Javier Sauza launched the company in 1950, right on Mexican Independence Day. They created the Hornitos Reposado tequila even before it had its name. The deeper, more complex notes of this tequila were seen as an innovative take on the spirit, and from there, its popularity grew.

Since then, Hornitos has been making tequilas, focusing on having a fresh take on life. Alongside their Plata Silver Tequila, Hornitos also sells the following:

  • Reposado Tequila – Pale straw in color with notes of agave, herbal, and green apple.
  • Añejo Tequila – Rich, tawny brown color flavored with a unique blend of vanilla, hazelnut, and strong agave nectar.
  • Cristalino Clear Tequila  – Crystal clear in color with honey and floral notes.
  • Black Barrel Tequila – Has a rich dark amber color flavored with agave and woody notes.
  • Tequila Lime Shot – Clear tequila that’s been infused with natural lime.

For this post, however, we’ll do a Hornitos Tequila Plata review.

*In all of our reviews, we don’t delve deep into the company that makes these tequilas; we just want to give you some basic information about the creators. Feel free to read more about Hornitos on their website if you want to learn more.

About Hornitos Plata Silver Tequila

How is Plata Different from Blanco?

This type of clear tequila is often referred to by various names. From plata, blanco, silver, or white, these are all unaged and colorless, and while they may have slight differences due to processing, they are essentially all the same.

Cost

The price of a 750 ml bottle of Hornitos Tequila Plata varies widely depending on the store. Some sell it for as low as $15.99, while others go as high as $30.99. Given this range, the average price for a single bottle is around $21.99.

This makes it a fairly economical tequila brand to buy as other non-premium brands like Don Julio Blanco Tequila sell at an average of $50 per 750 bottle whereas Jose Cuervo Tradicional Plata’s price starts at $27.99.

Ingredients

Unfortunately, Hornitos’ website doesn’t list their Plata Tequila’s ingredients.

Its bottle indicates that it’s made from 100% Pure Agave but doesn’t state if it’s blue agave. Typically, tequilas made with 100% blue agave are considered higher quality than others, so do with that what you will.

Flavors

Since it’s made from pure agave, it has a crisp and refreshing taste. Thanks to its unaged, pure form, you’re hit with a clean, slightly floral and herbal aroma right from the first sip. The flavor profile is vibrant, with a nice balance of sweet agave, fruity notes, and hints of citrus, followed by a black pepper spice taste.

We pulled these tasting notes from Hornitos marketing. Even though we taste a variety of tequila, we are not experts and it’s REALLY hard to pull out flavor notes on your own. It’s even harder than wine tasting.

The flavor is quite light and not overly complex which makes it a great choice for mixing into margaritas. However, we found it too sharp to enjoy it neat.

Alcohol Content

It has 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof), which is pretty much standard for most tequilas that we’ve tried.

Packaging and Presentation

Suzy bought the Hornitos plata as part of a seasonal gift set that also came with 2 ounce sized glasses, which is nice.

The bottle itself is really simple and showcases the crystal-clear tequila inside. The gold-colored cap looks nice, while the mint-green Hornitos label is easy on the eyes. We liked its simple aesthetics and unique shape.

Serving

Hornitos lists plenty of cocktail recipes in which Tequila Plata would be perfect, such as Ranch Water Cocktail, Mango Margarita, and Feeling Spicy Cocktail. It’s a pretty solid tequila for making flavored margaritas or other tequila drinks.

Tasting Notes

When we tasted this tequila, our mouths felt tingly. There was a bit of burning down our throats and up our noses, which can be distracting. While the agave flavor is somewhat present, we also detected some black peppery heat at the end, which we’re not big fans of.

This tequila is definitely on the sharper side, which might be appreciated by those who adore margaritas with spice. However, that made it hard for us to recommend that people sip this tequila neat. We certainly wouldn’t!

Overall Rating and Conclusion

To sum up our Hornitos Tequila Plata review, on a margarita scale of 1 to 5, we give Hornitos Plata Tequila a 3. It’s budget-friendly (depending on where you buy it) and readily available in most areas. However, it does have a peppery spiciness that can be borderline uncomfortable.

We highly recommend buying and using this tequila only for making flavored margaritas or other cocktails.
